How It Differs from the Injection Vaccine

・No injection, so no pain
・Children who would need 2 doses of the injection vaccine (under 9 at our clinic) need only 1 dose
・Because it is a live vaccine, it is generally expected to give stronger and longer-lasting protection than the inactivated vaccine. Because it is given through the nose, it is also expected to build immunity in the lining of the nose.

Side Effects and Precautions

・Because a weakened virus is sprayed into the nose, you may have flu-like symptoms (fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, etc.) as side effects.
・For about 2 weeks after vaccination, the flu virus may be found in the nose or throat, and a flu antigen test may show a positive result. If you get a fever after vaccination and see a doctor, be sure to tell them that you received FluMist.
・If you live with or are often near someone with a weakened immune system (for example, a family member), please talk to us before getting the vaccine.
